IDR Forgiveness Taxable in 2026? What the IRS Says

Short answer: The IRS National Taxpayer Advocate says that if your federal student loan balance is forgiven under an income-driven repayment plan in 2026 or later, the amount forgiven is generally treated as taxable income (cancellation of debt). The American Rescue Plan exclusion applied only to discharges from 2021 through December 31, 2025, and expired. You may receive a Form 1099-C in January or February of the following year and report the amount on the return for the year the debt was canceled. For forgiveness processed in 2026, that is your 2026 Form 1040, filed in 2027.
What stays tax-free (per the same IRS page)
Public Service Loan Forgiveness, Teacher Loan Forgiveness and discharges due to death or total and permanent disability do not create a tax liability. If you were insolvent when the debt was forgiven, you may be able to exclude some or all of it by filing Form 982.
The 2025 timing point
If you received notification in 2025 that your loan was eligible, you may not have a tax liability even if it was processed in 2026 (IRS page). The CNBC summary of the Department's settlement says discharges for borrowers eligible in 2025 are treated as effective in 2025; keep the dated notice. We did not verify this on the Department's own site.

State treatment varies and is outside this page.
Made-up illustration
If $30,000 were forgiven in 2026 and you had other taxable income, the $30,000 would be added to your 2026 income; the tax depends on your total income and bracket. We don't compute it.
What to do
Estimate possible tax in advance with a tax professional or the IRS tools, and keep your servicer notices and any Form 1099-C.
