Short answer: Federal Student Aid says that starting July 1, 2026, federal student loan borrowers enrolled in auto pay get a 1% interest rate reduction. Borrowers who enroll by December 31, 2026 (or are already enrolled) keep that reduction through June 30, 2028.
Key facts from StudentAid.gov
- Auto pay lets your servicer deduct your payment from your bank account on the due date each month.
- You can use auto pay while on an income-driven plan.
- The enrollment deadline for this reduction is December 31, 2026. The reduction is described through June 30, 2028.
- The figure on this page is the 1% on the current Federal Student Aid page. Older pages may still mention a 0.25% discount.
- If you switch plans (for example after SAVE), a higher payment also raises the automatic withdrawal amount.
Checklist before enrolling
- Confirm your servicer and ask whether your loans are eligible. We did not verify exclusions.
- Be sure the account has enough funds on the withdrawal date so you avoid an overdraft and a missed payment.
- If you are on RAP, on-time payments matter for the interest waiver and principal match. See RAP principal match explained.
- Pick your plan first. See what to do after SAVE.
- Keep your servicer contact details current.
What the discount does not do
It reduces the interest rate. It does not, by itself, change the required payment on an income-driven plan, which is based on income. We did not find whether the discount applies the same way to every loan type and plan, so check with your servicer. The payment comparator does not apply the 1% for you. If you want to see a rate after the reduction, type that rate yourself.
